This film sheds light on the origins of adultification bias and its direct connection to the amplified violence and dehumanization Black girls and women face today. \n\n\n\nHear from educators\, scholars\, therapists\, and activists as they share their experiences and perspectives on dismantling this racial prejudice for the future. Join The Brooklyn (NY) Chapter of The Links\, Incorporated and Weeksville Heritage Center for “Lift Every Voice\, Cast Every Vote: A Night of Honoring this Legacy through Art and Conversation.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur theme is honoring democracy\, from Weeksville to Shirley Chisholm to the present. In that spirit\, award-winning actress\, Ingrid Griffin\, will present her riveting one-woman show\, Unbossed Unbowed\, which chronicles the life of Shirley Chisholm\, a Brooklyn native\, the first Black woman elected to Congress\, and the first woman from a major party to run for President of the United States. The night will also feature a welcome reception\, voter registration\, and a panel discussion moderated by Toni Yuille Williams and featuring Shaquana Boykin\, District Leader\, Assembly District 57; Dr. Raymond Codrington; President and CEO\, Weeksville Heritage Center; Zinga Fraser\, Ph.D.\, Director\, Shirley Chisholm Project\, Brooklyn College; Kathleen Daniel\, NYC Civic Engagement Commission and; Jordan Gaither\, Independent Filmmaker.The setting for “Lift Every Voice\, Cast Every Vote” is a main character in this freedom story. Weeksville is a historic neighborhood founded in 1838 by Black people acting on their newfound freedom. DESCRIPTION:sessions is a space for deep listening\, curated by Lovie of summer school radio. \n\n\n\nsessions will transform Weeksville Heritage Center’s performance space into an experiential room for sound\, featuring curated music and live performance tailored for deep listening\, contemplation\, grooving\, and feeling. For session (3)\, Lovie will be joined by Laraaji\, with sound by KARLALA soundsystem.  \n\n\n\nThis will be a listening room: \n\n\n\nWhen the session begins\, attendees will be asked to maintain a silent room. This is a seated space\, and you are welcome to bring blankets or pillows for comfort. \n\n\n\nTea and refreshments will be served between 6 and 7 pm\, with the listening session beginning promptly at 7. This event is free to attend with RSVP\, with limited space for walk ins. \n\n\n\n\nrsvp here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLovie (summer school radio) – Broadcasting monthly from The Lot Radio\, summer school radio started as a pandemic project from Brooklyn-based Lovie–her first venture as a music curator. she had yet to play beyond her bedroom when The Lot Radio offered her a now 4-year-old residency\, slowly but surely becoming a staple show on the platform. a devoted following of listeners tune in to hear Lovie’s discoveries for a sonic range that spans ambient\, spoken word\, spiritual jazz\, soul\, and alternative R&B. in 2024\, summer school radio expanded beyond the digital into the physical\, and now presents deep listening sessions at Weeksville Heritage Center in Crown Heights\, Brooklyn. \n\n\n\nLaraaji — “With his homemade synths and cosmic positivity\, Laraaji tells tales of sound with joy. He is a musician\, mystic and laughter-meditation practitioner whose decades-long work conveys a spiritual message. Based in New York City\, he started out as a street performer in the ’70s\, improvising trance-inducing jams on a handmade\, modified Autoharp.” Today\, Laraaji is renowned as a stunning multi-instrumentalist\, and pioneer of meditative\, ambient\, new age music\, still touring globally nearly half a century after his debut album.

Through an inspiring combination of vocals\, dance\, and piano\, this production explores the themes of sisterhood\, hope\, love\, and the liberative Black Femme experience. \n\n\n\nThe performers honor Nina Simone by embracing her self-honesty\, guiding the audience to reflect on their own truths. Using motifs of line dancing\, hand percussion\, and syncopated rhythms\, the performers explore Black diasporic practices\, creating a space of spontaneity and structure. She pursued her multiple interests at Goucher College and graduated with high honors in Dance\, Visual Art and Secondary Education. As the Director of VLA DANCE she is researching how to lead with joy\, pleasure\, and breath in and outside of art making practices. This work is guided through the lineage of Black and queer liberation practitioners. \n\n\n\nAlongside directing VLA DANCE\, Victoria is a freelance artist\, who most recently choreographed for Huntington Theater\, Company One Theatre\, Boston Lyric Opera\, and Commonwealth Shakespeare. Victoria is also an educator having worked at Salem State University\, Brown University\, West End House\, Middlesex School\, and Urbanity Dance. She continues to deepen her teaching practices as a mentee with Midday Movement Series. Victoria is currently a Brother Thomas Fellow\, and recipient of the Next Steps for Boston Grant Dance Program as well as a recipient of the Queer (Re)public Theater Offensive Residency. Through her work she aims to inspire people to pause and reflect on their actions towards themselves\, their community and their environment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamila Cortina Bello\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamila Cortina Bello is a pianist\, educator\, musicologist and composer. Born in Havana\, Cuba\, she has taken the stage in her home country and has performed for audiences around the world. Her music intends to re-imagine the sounds and rhythms of her original Cuban roots through the lens of jazz\, classical and world music. \n\n\n\nCamila studied classical piano and ethnomusicology in Havana. In 2010\, after finishing her studies\, she moved to Singapore\, where she performed as a pianist and music director for different international bands across South Asia\, including Indonesia and Malaysia. She relocated to Boston in 2018 as a recipient of the Berklee World Tour Full Tuition Scholarship to further her studies in Jazz Composition and Global Jazz Performance. \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, Camila was an awardee of New Music USA’s “Next Jazz Legacy Program\,” which supports emerging women in jazz. Since then\, she has shared the stage with Paquito D’Rivera\, Miguel Zenon\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, and Dianne Reeves\, among many others\, and performed at the Cape May Jazz Festival\, DC Jazz Festival\, Ecuador Jazz Festival\, and Festival Internacional de Jazz de Punta del Este (Uruguay\, 2024). She also released her first EP\, “Sonera\,” which is available on all streaming platforms. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDamaris Calderon\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDamaris Calderon or Mars for short\, is a Boston-born Creative\, Curator and Arts administrator who cares deeply for arts advocacy\, black liberation\, and building a thriving community for the next generations to come. She began her passion for community engagement and organizing during her years at Umass Boston as a student of Professor Dr. Tony Van Deer Meer and Aminah Pilgrim within the Africana Studies Department. There she quickly realized the power of the arts as a means of educating the greater public as well as providing access to the experiences of black people worldwide.  \n\n\n\nIn 2017\, she completed her first independent seminar as a research project based on her time in Cuba eventually creating a short film called “The Afro Guantanamo Project”. This film was accompanied by her essay examining the influences of Santeria practices in Afrocentric Cuban culture & ideologies\, she went on to present her film at the Black Communities Conference in Durham\, North Carolina shortly after. This was a pivotal time in her life to truly understand the need to document black culture whether in the states or overseas. Mars continued to create and work in the art world as a cultural producer & curator. She strives to amplify and uplift the efforts of all dedicated to the accurate representation of black folks\, hoping to creatively collaborate in building an ecosystem that is sustainable and conducive for our people to live their best lives. She currently is the Manager of Community Engagement at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum leading free\, inclusive\, artful experiences for all the community to enjoy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPascale Florestal\n\n\n\nPortrait of Pascale Florestal at the Modern Theatre.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPascale Florestal is a first generation Haitian American Queer Woman. She is an Elliot Norton Nominated Director\, Educator\, Dramaturg\, Writer and Collaborator based in Boston\, MA. Recent Directing Credits: MidSummer; Kinda? Written and Directed by Pascale Florestal at Suffolk University\, World Premiere of Phaedra Michelle Scott’s DIASPORA! with New Repertory Theater\, Magic Flute with MassOpera\, Fairview with SpeakEasy Stage\, Spring Awakening at Brandeis University\, The Colored Museum with The Umbrella Performing Arts Center\, Once On This Island with SpeakEasy Stage\, This Girl Laughs\, This Girl Cries\, This Girl Does Nothing with Emerson Stage\, Everybody with Boston Conservatory and others. Pascale also serves as the Associate Director for The Broadway National Tour of Jagged Little Pill. \n\n\n\nIn 2021 Pascale was named one of the WBUR ARTery 25 Artists of Color Transforming the Cultural Landscape in Boston. In 2020 she won the Inaugural Greg Ferrell Award for her excellence in teaching and supporting young people. She serves as the Director of Education for The Front Porch Arts Collective in residence at The Huntington Theater. She is an Assistant Professor of Theater at Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music and Visiting Guest Artist Professor in Practice in the Theater at Suffolk University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDesiré Graham\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDesiré Graham is a submerging Artist In-Practice from Harlem\, NY and holds a BFA in Theatre Arts from Boston University and Minor in Black studies where she earned the Kahn Career Entry Award in 2018. Graham has appeared in productions with Speakeasy Stage\, New Repertory Theatre\, FreshInk Theatre\, Hibernian Hall in Boston\, MA and was a company member at the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards\, in Italy\, from 2019-2022. Graham currently works with Double Edge Theatre\, VLA Dance\, and Wender Collective as a recurring collaborator. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, Graham curates The Black Residency and hosts the workshop series entitled Somewhere in Between\, for BIPOC and ALAANA peoples to discover the use of communal singing\, give weight to their vibrational soul\, activate\, and call on others to join in. Graham is a 2024 Princess Grace Foundation Award winner\, having previously received other various honoraria from MASS MoCA\, American Repertory Theater\, Connecticut Office of the Arts\, and other cultural organizations.

DESCRIPTION:On August 8-10\, 2024\,  Black Reconstruction Collective presents Unmonument Brooklyn: City Refuge with Weeksville Heritage Center. This is the second iteration of the Unmonument traveling installation\, an architectural project centering a nomadic sculpture conceived as an ‘exquisite corpse’ exercise\, meant to refuse traditional ideas of monuments and inspire collective action. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConceived as a means to reimagine possibilities for the emancipation for the African Diaspora\, Unmonument memorializes the Liberators of Black America – Harriet Tubman\, Nat Turner\, Toussaint Louverture – and the Self-Liberated communities found throughout the Americas – Ambrosio\, Fort Mose\, The Great Dismal Swamp. Challenging the concept of monuments and their inherent myths of power\, permanence\, and collective experience\, the Unmonument sculpture appears almost as a piece of scaffolding or construction equipment. Each iteration of this collection of works (which has been on view in various iterations at MoMA\, PioneerWorks\, and Art Omi) is a reflection on resistance\, resilience\, and restoration\, drawing inspiration from the Maroon communities of the Americas and the Caribbean.

Jean-Louis\, Chief Historian\, and Natiba Guy-Clement\, Assistant Director for Collections and Public Service at the Center for Brooklyn History. They will delve into how the histories of Black Brooklyn are collected\, preserved\, and made accessible\, bridging their roles as Black women doing history and memory work in Brooklyn. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule \n\n\n\n6:30pm – Doors open. Light bites and refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\n7:00pm – Lecture begins \n\n\n\n7:30pm – Talkback and Q&A \n\n\n\n8:30pm – Event ends \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Joan Maynard \n\n\n\nDr. Joan Cooper Bacchus Maynard (August 28\, 1928 – January 22\, 2006) became a founding member of the Society for the Preservation of Weeksville & Bedford-Stuyvesant History in 1968\, its president in 1972 and\, in 1974\, became the Society’s first executive director and served until October 1999. She was a trustee emeritus of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and received its highest honor\, the Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award. Dr. Maynard was also a founding member of the African American Museum Association. Throughout her career\, she received accolades from various city departments\, universities\, museums\, and cultural and arts organizations for her leadership at Weeksville. \n\n\n\nDr. Maynard was the daughter of John W. Cooper\, a Brooklyn ventriloquist (1873 – 1966)\, and Juliana St. Bernard Cooper\, a seamstress (1883 – 1960) from Grenada. She graduated from Empire State College\, SUNY\, and held an honorary doctorate from Bank Street College of Education.  Prior to her involvement with Weeksville\, Dr. Maynard was an accomplished artist.  She was an art director for publisher McGraw-Hill and went on to be an illustrator for the black history comic series Golden Legacy Magazine.  She also drew covers for The Crisis\, the official NAACP magazine\, and Freedomways\, the main journal of the 20th-century black arts and intellectual movement.

DESCRIPTION:The American LGBTQ+ Museum\, alongside Sara Elise\, welcome you to the historic Weeksville Heritage Center for a celebration of Queer life\, as we collectively co-create a future historical photo archive of present-day Queer NYC\, making our own images that depict what it looks like for our community to rest\, enjoy ourselves\, and play together. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ve all seen and studied images of our Queer family at rallies and protests\, fighting and striving for our hard-won rights. And it seems we hear of and experience more tragedy each day\, reminding us that there is always more work to be done for all of us to feel safe and be free. And while our history and our struggle should not be undermined or erased\, this is not the full picture of who we are as Queer people in community together. Where are representations of our joy and celebration? Where are representations of our rest and softness. \n\n\n\nHow can new images of us resting\, playing\, and posing with our loved ones reflect a more complete picture of who we are and how we tenderly create community together\, in the midst of pain and struggle? \n\n\n\nThe day is framed by the prompts\, “What does your rest look like? What does your play look like?” — helping us all to ask ourselves questions that\, particularly as members of marginalized communities\, we don’t often hear or give ourselves permission to consider. \n\n\n\nAfter the photography component\, guests will learn more about the vision and inspiration behind the event before diving into a dynamic panel\, featuring photographer Lola Flash\, photographer Naima Green\, and co-founder of BLK MKT Vintage Kiyanna Handy\, about the importance of queer history and being in charge of our own narratives\, led by The American LGBTQ+ Museum. Guests will then be encouraged to participate in a “Summer Camp”-themed field game led by Sara Elise. \n\n\n\nThroughout the day\, guests are encourage to reflect on: \n\n\n\n\nThe importance of archiving for queer history\n\n\n\nHow can we create a future archive of queer history that we feel is actually representative of us?\n\n\n\nWhat does it look like for us to create the realistic and reflective imagery of who we are; to be the narrators in our stories versus just observing what is being told of us?\n\n\n\nHow do we visually create the history we want to be remembered by? How do we amplify historically-silenced histories?\n\n\n\nWhat does it look like for us to be in control of our own archiving?\n\n\n\nHow do we positively manipulate or influence future history?\n\n\n\n\nThere will be DJ sets from iconic queer DJ’s Boston Chery and Adair throughout the day; snacks by @HarvestandRevel Catering; food by @EatDearHenry; and signed copies of A Recipe for More: Ingredients for a Life of Abundance and Ease available for purchase. \n\n\n\nParticipants can sign up for a timed slot to pose with artist + photographer Khaleb Brooks as an add-on to your ticket. Once the project is complete\, all photos will live in an online archive representing what it means to be Queer and in New York at this moment. \n\n\n\nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS\n\n\n\n11:30AM: Doors open at Weeksville Heritage Center \n\n\n\n12:00-2:00PM: Participants arrive for their timed photo slots. Photo participants are encouraged to bring their own props that represent their family\, heritage\, and culture\, or pose with some of the historical objects provided by BLK MKT Vintage. While waiting for their appointments\, guests can delight in the provided snacks and set up their blankets to enjoy a DJ set on The Meadow by DJ Boston Chery. \n\n\n\n2:00PM: Dear Henry is available vending delicious lunch options to guests on The North Lawn. Get a meal\, hydrate\, and rest before the panel begins. \n\n\n\n2:30PM: Join Sara Elise in learning more about the vision behind the event\, and in welcoming The American LGBTQ+ Museum’s Director of Programs and Partnerships\, Suhaly Bautista-Carolina\, who will be moderating a panel featuring Lola Flash\, Naima Green\, and Kiyanna Handy\, discussing what it looks like to create realistic and reflective imagery of our communities\, to be the architects of future historical photo archives\, and how to be the narrator of our own stories versus just observing what is being told about us. The panelists will also be discussing the importance of amplifying historically-silenced histories\, the difference between restorative and transformative history\, and how we can gather together to re-imagine and thus re-create a future history for ourselves that more accurately represents who we are as a community. \n\n\n\n3:15PM: Sara Elise will share some prompts for consideration for the remainder of the day\, while guests are encouraged to rest and eat. \n\n\n\n3:30PM: Participate in a group “Summer Camp”-themed field game on The North Lawn. \n\n\n\n4:30-6:00PM: Hangout\, rest on the lawn\, dance\, and enjoy some summer beats by DJ Adair.

DESCRIPTION:What does inheritance mean to you?  \n\n\n\nSpend the eve of Juneteenth with us as we celebrate the opening of   \n\n\n\nInheritance/SHACK\,  a socially engaged collaborative art project by artist Walis Johnson. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by Beverly Buchanan’s iconic vernacular shack sculptures\, “Inheritance/SHACK” brings together thirteen Brooklyn community members who have learned carpentry to design\, build\, and install shack-like sculptures. These creations explore themes of inheritance\, cultural preservation\, and the significance of African American spaces. \n\n\n\nLight bites and refreshments will be served from 6 to 7 pm. The artist talk\, followed by a community Q&A and screening\, will begin at 7 pm. \n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition: \n\n\n\nInheritance/SHACK invites you to reflect on the meaning of inheritance. Drawing from the works of Beverly Buchanan this project explores how we\, as Black people\, build on the inheritances of the past\, embrace the present\, and nurture spaces of care\, creativity\, and transformational possibility. \n\n\n\nJohnson’s past projects have engaged New York City residents in dialogues about race\, property\, and history\, using art as a catalyst for storytelling and community reflection. DESCRIPTION:Weeksville Heritage Center and Jummy’s Picks by Black-Owned Brooklyn are partnering again for our third annual Juneteenth Food Festival! Join us on Saturday\, June 15\, from 11 am – 8 pm for this vibrant celebration of Black food and culture with 40+ food vendors and artisans.  \n\n\n\nFrom sizzling barbecue and crispy catfish\, to red velvet cake and homemade ice cream (plus abundant vegan options)\, the festival is steeped in tradition. Food has been a part of Juneteenth since its first observance in 1866\, commemorating June 19\, 1865 — when enslaved Texans received news of their freedom\, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, the festival features a marketplace of specialty items from local Black artisans and dynamic programming including all-day sets by the Soul Summit DJ crew\, performances by champion double dutch team the Jazzy Jumpers\, workshops by Haus of Glitter dance collective and restorative yoga led by Sensate Wellness.
